Reporting from Dallas, Nerissa Knight writes for CW33 News that the state of Texas ranks sixth out of 23 states that have seen a rise in teenage car wreck deaths, according to a study conducted by the Governors Highway Safety Association.
Now there's a Teen Click It or Ticket campaign, orchestrated by the Texas Department of Transportation, which starts tomorrow, and will go through 700 high schools and colleges, as Knight reports.
"We're targeting those age groups," says one TxDOT representative. "It's about getting them to understand that you really do need to buckle up for safety."
The rise in teenage traffic deaths in Texas is prompting some Dallas-area teens to delay driving altogether. "I live close to everything, so I just walk," says one teen. "I think it's safer and it's just cheaper."
In our practice, we've seen that there are a variety of ways in which teens can get hurt around motor vehicles. The big issues these days are texting while driving, drunk driving, and poor driving (like speeding).
Sometimes, it just comes down to a lack of experience. And teen drivers generally lack experience behind the wheel.
